Can’t Scare Me: The Story of Mother Jones at the EMK Center

A play titled “Can’t Scare Me: The Story of Mother Jones” will be staged today at 7pm at the EMK Center in the capital’s Dhanmondi area. The play was written and performed by Kaiulani Lee, a veteran stage, film and TV actor in the US.

Set in the 1900s, the play tells the story of Mother Jones who, after immigrating from Canada to the US, lived through the American Civil War and the Great Chicago Fire.

Her personal life mirrored the tragedies about her: she lost her husband and all four of her small children to a yellow-fever epidemic. Unable to save her own family, she dedicated her life to protecting and saving others.

The one-performer, one-act play opened at the Atlas Theater in Washington, DC in 2011.

Lee, who now tours nationally and internationally to perform her plays, has starred in over a dozen plays on and off Broadway. She has been nominated for the Drama Desk Award on Broadway and has won the Obie Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Achievement.

The show is free for all.
