Bangladesh has been re-elected as a council member of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for the second consecutive term for 2015 to 2018.
The election was held on October 27 at a plenipotentiary conference of ITU in Busan, South Korea, BSS reported.
Bangladesh bagged 115 votes and was elected the council member, State Minister for ICT Division Zunaid Ahmed Palak said in a press conference at the ministry on Sunday.
"This is a landmark victory for the country's telecommunication and ICT sector as Bangladesh will get more ITU assistance to build the necessary infrastructure to expand technological network," he said.
The minister said Bangladesh's successful re-election to the ITU council will give it an opportunity to contribute at global policy levels for protecting the interest of the Least Developing Countries (LDC).
He said Bangladesh's re-election also reaffirms the recognition of the government's globally acclaimed vision of a Digital Bangladesh.
Bangladesh won its membership to the ITU Executive Council for the first time in 2010. The tenure is due for expiry in December.
The ITU is the United Nations specialised agency that deals with telecom-related matters aiming to ensure networks and improve access to ICT for under-served communities worldwide.
