UK Minister for International Development Lynne Featherstone yesterday said it would send a conflicting message to the world if Bangladesh changes the child marriage limit to 16 years from 18.
“I think it will send a very conflicting message,” she said at a press briefing in the city.
Featherstone arrived in the city on Sunday on a three-day visit. This is her first visit to Bangladesh.
Referring to the commitment made by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Girls Summit in London in July, she said: “It seemed to contradict what the prime minister committed to at the London Girls Summit.”
