JU expels 23 BCL leaders and activists

The Jahangirnagar University authorities have expelled 23 students from the institution on different terms including five for life over a factional clash of the ruling party's student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League on August 21.

The decision came at the regular Syndicate meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Farzana Islam on Saturday night.

Chhatra League's JU unit General Secretary Rajib Ahmed Rasel welcomed the decision claiming that his organisation never allowed any form of violence.

On August 21, Moulana Bhasani Hall unit General Secretary Aninda Baroi along with his followers launched an attack on President of the same unit Faisal Ahmed Shakil and his followers over establishing supremacy inside the dormitory. At least 10 leaders and activists sustained severe injuries during the clash.

After the incident, Chhatra league central committee abolished the unit and expelled four leaders and activists.

Of the 23 facing punishment, five students were expelled for life while seven for two years, three for one year, five for six months and two were expelled for three months.

The authorities also imposed fines worth Tk12.78 lakh on all the expelled students declaring them unwanted on the campus during the expulsion period.

The honours and masters certificates of Senior Joint Secretary Russel Mahmud of physics were suspended and he was declared unwanted on the campus for lifetime.

Those expelled for life are Organising Secretary KM Nurunnabi; Assistant Secretary Istiak Ahmed Bijoy; Moulana Bhasani Hall unit General Secretary Aninda Baroi; and activists Ekhtekharuzzaman Sanchay and Kishor Das.

Registrar Abu Bakr Siddique told the Dhaka Tribune that the decision was made following recommendation of the disciplinary committee. The accused students were fined as they had vandalised properties and looted valuables of the general students during the clash.

Shihab Khandaker Sujon of physics department; Kazi Raihan Habib Himel of marketing and Md Nishat Rahman Ramim of finance and banking department were expelled for one year while Shanta Kumar Nath of environmental science and Shakil Uz-Zaman of botany were expelled for six months.

Delwar Jahan Jhontu of philosophy department, Abhijit Kumar Singha of marketing, Md Ehsanur Rahman Abir and Pavel Rahman of economics, and Md Abdul Momin Chanchal of botany department were expelled for three months.
