The police have detained 25 people following a clash between the students of Shahjalal City College students and microbus drivers in the city's uposhohor area.
Witnesses said the students engaged in an altercation with the microbus drivers over a trivial matter around 12 noon. At one stage, they locked into a clash, leaving some five college students injured.
Acting on a tip-off, the police rushed in and fired tear-gas shells, rubber bullets and charged batons to control the situation, said Rahmat Ullah, Additional deputy commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police.
He said 25 people, including the students, have been detained from the spot.
Ohee Alam Reza, Lecturer of Shahjalal City College alleged that the microbus drivers beat up some students and vandalised the college building during the clash.
Later, five students were admitted to Osmani Medical College Hospital, he added.
Microbus drivers also blocked the uposhohor road for half-an-hour after the clash. Later, the police removed the barricade.
Local word councilor Suhel Ahmed Ripon said: “We are trying to settle the matter.”
Additional police forces were deployed in the area to avert any further clash, said police.
