20 suspects in violence cases held in capital

The police, in a drive, have detained 20 people from different points of the capital's Paltan area in a move to combat the rising violence.

Confirming to the Dhaka Tribune about the detention, Paltan police station Officer-in-Charge Md Sarwar Hossain said: “We have detained at least 20 people for their alleged involvement with incidents of violence on Tuesday morning. Their identities cannot be made public at present as they are suspects.”

“We are questioning them. After the investigation, the decision will be made whether they will be shown arrested in cases of violence or will be set free.”

A Dhaka Tribune correspondent reporting from the Nayapaltan area said that the police have detained at least 10-12 JCD members from in front of the BNP party office in the morning.

Quoting witnesses, he said the police have picked up 10-12 JCD members, who gathered in the area to stage a pre-announced programme, protesting the filing of the fresh lawsuit against BNP Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman.

However, the Paltan OC denied the news of detaining JCD members and said: “The detention was made as per our regular activities. We are yet to enquire about their political identities.”
