In the wake of a Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) report that the discipline in the field administration may collapse unless deputy commissioners (DCs) and superintendents of police (SPs) work together, the Home Minister yesterday wrote to the Public Administration Ministry and the inspector general of police (IGP) to take measures about this.
“We have issued letters to the Public Administration Ministry and IGP to take steps after receiving a letter along with a report on it,” Mozammel Haque Khan, a senior secretary at the Home Ministry, told the Dhaka Tribune over phone yesterday.
Police headquarters would instruct the superintendents of police and the public administration ministry would instruct DCs to narrow gap between them, and work in a concerted effort, he said.
Preferring not to be quoted, a senior official at the Home Ministry said the PMO sent a letter along with a report to the Home Ministry a few days back, instructing that measures be taken against the possible collapse in the field administration. The official said there is a gap of age between DCs and SPs. Admin cadre officers from 9th to 13th batches have been given posting as DC while officers of police cadre from 17th to 20th batches have been given posting as SP.
Moreover, the DCs still possess the mindset of colonial rule that they are the bosses while SPs have good ties with politicians and so they do not care anybody, he said.
Quoting from the report, he concluded that there is no coordination between DCs and SPs, which may create anarchy in the field administration.
