Indefinite transport strike begins in Sylhet

The indefinite transport strike called by Bangladesh Road Transport Workers’ Unity Council in Sylhet has begun on Sunday morning.

The strike was called demanding realisation of the association's five-point demand.

Selim Ahmed Falik, president of the union, said: "The strike will be continued until or demands are not met."

District Auto-Tempo and Auto-Rickshaw Workers' Union President MD Jakaria said: “CNG-run auto-rickshaws will be plying on the roads normally during the strike . Anyone trying to disrupt the movement will be prevented.”

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy-Commissioner Jedan Al Musa said: “We have not heard of any vandalism incidents so far but we have kept the police on alert to avoid untoward situations.”

Sherpur highway police Officer-in-Charge Nur Nabbi Sarkar said: “Vehicles were not seen on the roads due to the strike.”

The demands are decreasing corruption at BRTA office; harassment of police; setting up grill at CNG run auto-rickshaws; rebuilding rundown Sylhet-Tamabil road and mitigating transport related cases at Sylhet instead of Sayestagang, Habiganj.
