Inclusion of Manorama Basu's life sketch in curriculum demanded

The 28th death anniversary of politician and human rights activist Manoroma Basu, popularly known as Masima, from country's southern region was observed on Thursday night in Barisal.

A meeting on the occasion of her birthday to discuss the life of Manorama was organised by Manorama Basu Masima Memorial Trust at Matri-Mandir Primary School, which was founded by Masima in Kawnia Road area of Barisal city.

The programme was presided over by Nikhil Sen. Speakers at the programme said Masima believed in work rather than words and sacrificed her life for the welfare and advancement of the society in spite of the religious binding and superstitions.

The participants at the programme paying tribute to the memories of Masima called for inclusion of life sketch and achievements of Masima in national curriculum to inspire the next generation.

Members of Udichi Shilpi Goshthi rendered performances at the end of the programme.

Manoroma Basu was born in 1897 at Narottampur village under Banaripara upazila of Barisal district. She was an active politician and fought against the British and Pakistani rulers, for which she was imprisoned several times. She established many educational, cultural and charitable organisations in her area. Manorama was involved in different progressive socio-cultural and political movements in the region till her death on October 16, 1986 at her residence in Barisal.
