PM greets Saber on being elected IPU president

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has congratulated Saber Hossain Chowdhury on being elected the president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) for the next three years.

In a congratulatory message, Sheikh Hasina said through the victory of Saber Hossain Chowdhury in the IPU, another feather has been added to Bangladesh's success in creating global leadership.

The prime minister is now in Milan, Italy to attend the 10th ASEM Summit.

She said Bangladesh has now been recognized as a role model on the world stage due to its stunning success in the socioeconomic development.

"I hope that our global leaders would further brighten Bangladesh's image in the world by projecting the country's tremendous achievements through their activities," she said.

Saber Hossain, also the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, was elected the IPU president defeating three other contestants on the concluding day of the 131st conference of the organisation held in Geneva, Switzerland on Thursday.

In the election, he secured 169 votes and his nearest contestant Australian Parliament Speaker Bronwyn Bishop got 95 votes, a parliament secretariat press release said here.

Saber Hossain is the first Bangladeshi to win the IPU president post.
