A Supreme Court lawyer has filed a writ petition seeking High Court directive on the government and Dhaka University authorities to allow the relatives of Piash Karim to keep his body at the Central Shaheed Minar for paying tribute.
Advocate Dr Eunus Ali Akond filed the petition on Thursday. He said the HC may hold a hearing on the petition on Sunday.
The lawyer in his petition said, according to the article 27 of the constitution every citizen of the country is equal and has rights to get equal protection of law. People are the owner of Shaheed Minar and as Piash Karim and his relatives are also the citizen of the country they have the equal right to keep his body at Central Shaheed Minar.
“Though the DU authorities allowed many others to keep bodies of citizens there but they refused to allow relatives of Piash Karim to keep the body at the Central Shaheed Minar," he added.
Akond also prayed to the court to issue a rule upon the authorities to explain why the DU authority decision of not allowing Piash Karim's relatives to keep his body at the Shaheed Minar should not be declared illegal.
Eunus said: “If Piash Karims body buried before Sunday, then the HC will have hearing only on the DU authorities' decision.”
