No permission to take Piash’s body to Shaheed Minar

Dhaka University authority has not given the permission to Piash Karim’s family to take his body to the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital on Wednesday.

Prof Dr Arefin Siddique, Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University, told the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.

Earlier, Piash Karim’s family sent a letter to DU authority seeking permission in this connection.

On Tuesday, the authority decided not to allow the family to take the body of BRAC University teacher Piash Karim to Central Shaheed Minar amid the students organisations’ protest.

On October 13, Prof Piash Karim died of cardiac arrest at a city hospital in his late fifties.

Following his family members’ decision, several organisations have announced programmes to resist the move labelling him as a man against the 1971 Liberation War.

They alleged that Piash Karim had acted “against the Liberation War” of Bangladesh and that he was one of those who had made “negative remarks about the Shahbagh movement and the war crimes trials, particularly in television talk shows.”
