A female schoolteacher has sustained acid burns in the BIP Colony area of Barisal city in the early hours of Monday.

Family members of Asma Aktar, 34, a teacher of Amirabad Government Primary School under Nalchhity upazila of Jhalakati, filed a case against the husband of the victim.

The mother of an 8-year-old child, Asma, is undergoing treatment at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

Doctors said about 35-40% of the victim's body were burned by the inflammable liquid thrown upon her.

Abdur Rouf, deputy commissioner of Barisal Metropolitan Police, said being informed, police visited the spot and talked to the victim at the SBMCH.

Quoting family members, police said: “Asma married Masud Alam, an employee of River Research Institute of Faridpur, in 2002. In 2011, Alam sent a divorce letter to Asma and she lodged a case against the move with Family Court in Barisal.”

Following the lawsuit, Alam threatened Asma that she would have to face severe consequences if she did not withdraw the case.

Asma's family assumed that the acid might have be thrown at her to restrain her from appearing before the court as Monday was fixed for the hearing of the case.
