Mohajoner Nao sails for London

Subachan Nattya Sangsad’s acclaimed musical “Mohajoner Nao” (The Boat of Infinity) has been selected for this year’s A Season of Bangla Drama, an annual drama festival hosted by Tower Hamlets Council in London.

The festival has been taking place every November for the past 12 years, with an aim to explore how Bangla culture and heritage can be exported across continents and reinterpreted using a mixture of innovation and tradition to inspire as well as develop new audiences.

Written by Shakoor Majid and directed by Sudip Chakroborthy, the play is a biographical sketch of mystic bard Baul Shah Abdul Karim portrayed through the tradition of Baul folk songs, using music and lyrics to express thoughts on divinity and philosophy.

This is for the first time that a directorial venture of Sudip, whose latest production “Dokkhina Sundori” was staged at the inaugural session of the Commonwealth Games Cultural Programme in Glasgow, is taking part in the London festival.

An excited Sudip told the Dhaka Tribune: “It is a great platform for emerging writers, directors and performers to showcase their talents. The whole team of ‘Mohajoner Nao’ is very thrilled and we are rehearsing with our best effort.”

He also said that a team of 13 members including the writer and the director will be flying to London from Dhaka on October 31. Three shows of the play will be held at the Brady Art Centre on November 1-2.

“Mohajoner Nao” has been staged for 75 times till date, at home and abroad, including three provinces in India and South Korea. Before leaving for London, Subachan Nattya Sangsad will present a special show for the Dhaka audience towards the end of this month.
