30 injured in Habiganj clash

At least 30 people have been injured in a clash between rival groups of villagers at Baniyachong upazila in Habiganj.

The clash took place on Saturday morning following an altercation between Moazzem Mia, son of Ijjat Ali, and Sayeed Mia, son of Siddiq Ali of Shahpur village under Mokrompur union of Baniyachong upazila of the district.  

Officer-in-Charge of Baniyachong police station, Liakout Ali said: “At least 10 critically injured including one with bullet wound were admitted at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital while 20 others were admitted at Habiganj sadar hospital."

The villagers again locked into a clash while the injured were undergoing treatment in sadar hospital. 

They also vandalised the hospital during the clash.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in North zone, Md Nazmul Islam said police arrested Arif Mia, 20, son of Kuddus Mia of the village for his alleged involvement with the vandalism in the hospital.

“Necessary steps have been taken to arrest the others and recover the weapons used during the clash,” he added.
