Hide prices fixed low

The maximum buying price of raw cowhide has been fixed at Tk70-Tk75 per square foot in Dhaka and Tk60-Tk65 for outside during Eid-ul-Azha.

Last year, the hide prices were set at Tk85-Tk90 per square foot for Dhaka and Tk75-Tk80 for areas outside the capital.

Prices of goatskin will range between Tk30 and Tk35 per square foot, while buffalo at Tk40-Tk45 for throughout the country.

Abu Taher, chairman of Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods, and Footwear Exporters' Association made the announcement at a press conference at the organisation's Dhanmondi office in the capital on Friday.

The prices have been fixed low this Eid as the price of rawhide has fallen in the international market, said Abu Taher while replying to a query.

He said: “Our leather industry is passing through a crisis period. We are not getting any intensive from the government.”

“Besides, many international buyers are refusing to buy our products, reasoning that the infrastructural set-up of our leather processing factories are not environment friendly.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed asked the rawhide traders to fix the prices of rawhide of sacrificial animals by Friday, considering the global market price.

The rawhide traders had long been reluctant to set the prices of hides, reasoning that their prices are falling in the international market.

But sources said the international market witnesses a rising demand of animals' hides.
