Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has decided that no vehicle carrying cattle hides will be allowed to leave the capital during Eid-ul-Azha and next three days to prevent hide smuggling.
DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed announced the decision while addressing a press briefing on security measures ahead of Durga Puja and Eid-ul-Azha at DMP Media Centre in the capital yesterday.
He, however, said vehicle carrying cattle hides wishing to enter the capital will be allowed to do so.
Eid-ul-Azha, the second largest religious festival of Muslims to be celebrated on October 6 this year, is expected to generate huge number of cattle hides as thousands of sacrificial animals will be slaughtered across the country during the festival like previous years.
Earlier, a report by an intelligence agency had identified 13 routes across Bangladesh’s border that criminals use to smuggle out cattle hides to neighbouring countries.
Besides, the police chief also disclosed plans to ensure foolproof security during Durga Puja and Eid-ul-Azha in the capital.
The DMP commissioner said police forces will be deployed at 219 Puja Mandaps across the capital from September 29 and maintain vigilance on city roads and set up check points at different points of the capital to ensure the security during the vacations, he said.
Saying police would also ensure security for vehicles brining in cattle into the capital ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, Benazir added that police members will be deployed round the clock at 22 cattle markets – 21 temporary and 1 permanent ones – in the capital.
Urged people to remain alert of dope gangs, he also added: “We have already taken initiatives to stop their activities and already a number of people arrested through special drives.”
A number of CCTV camera have already been installed at different points of the capital including bus, train and launch terminals, so that people can reach their home towns without any hassle, he added.
