A Dhaka court has sentenced one person to death and six others to life term imprisonment for killing a Dhamrai resident in 2012.
Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal 3 Judge ABM Sajedur Rahman pronounced the verdict on Sunday afternoon.
Nazmul Huda Panna was killed by the convicts on March 6, 2012.
The death sentence awardee is Abdur Rashid. The lifers are Md Rafiqul Hasan Moksed, Biplob, Siddiqur Rahman, Monir, Asaduzzaman Asad and Rajon.
The court also acquitted eight other accused in the case as they were not found guilty.
Rafiqul Hasan Moksed, who was a chairman candidate for Chowhat union parishad election, had disputes with his rival candidate Nazrul Islam over the election.
Following the dispute, the convicts led by Moksed stabbed Panna, who was a supporter of chairman candidate Nazrul Islam, leaving him seriously injured on March 6, 2012.
Panna was rushed to Enam Medical College and Hospital in Savar where doctors pronounced him dead.
Hasu Begum, wife of Panna, lodged a case with Dhamrai police station in this connection the following day.
Investigation Officer Sub-Inspector Helal Uddin submitted a charge sheet against the accused in the case on June 29, 2012.
The court framed charges against the accused on January 28 this year.
