Election in Brahmanbaria municipality after 15 years

The first ever election of Brahmanbaria’s Nabinagar municipality, after its formation 15 years ago, is scheduled to be held on September 29.

A total of 100 candidates are vying for the posts of mayor, councillors and reserved seats for female councillors. Among them, 15 are competing for mayoral post, 74 for councillors and 11 candidates for the reserved women seats.

Four Awami League backed candidates and 7 from BNP are leading the race for mayoral post. Besides, there is one candidate with the support of Jamaat-e-Islami and 3 independent ones.

Though the election had generated much enthusiasm in Nabinagar, residents of the municipality had criticised the administration for being oblivious to the violation of electoral rules by the candidates. The Nabinagar municipality, formed in 1999, has a total of 30,270 voters in 9 wards. The election will be held in 11 centres.
