HRFB condemns Bangladesh govt's stance on LGBT rights

Human Rights Forum Bangladesh (HRFB) has condemned the Bangladeshi government's stance on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) individuals rights.

The organisation has issued a press release in this regard on Monday.

According to the press release, the HRFB is deeply concerned that the government of Bangladesh has once again opposed acknowledging the human rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) individuals.

Referring to a report of the Dhaka Tribune, the press note stated: “The Dhaka Tribune on 14 September 2014 reported that Bangladesh did not support the recommendations of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) to provide rights for Lesbian and Gay people.”

The press release also mentioned that the HRFB considered the government's stance on LGBT as shameful and that it fails to protect the rights of gender and sexual minorities but also condones discrimination and violence against them.

The LGBT Rights Forum criticised the government by saying it failed to realise that LGBT rights were not a set of exclusive rights that the constitution guarantees its every single citizen.

It read: “Both UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon and former High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay have repeatedly emphasised on the universality of human rights and have spoken against anti-LGBT laws.”
