4 fishermen burnt as trawler catches fire

At least four fishermen have sustained severe burn injuries and several others gone missing as a fishing trawler caught fire in the Karnaphuli River near Firingibazar fisheryghat in the port city on Saturday.

The injured are Nuruddin, 43, Md Liton, 30 and Md Akbar, 30 and Alamgir, 45.

Quoting on duty doctors, Sub-Inspector (SI) Jahirul Islam, in-charge of CMCH Police Outpost told the Dhaka Tribune, the injured have been admitted at Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

Of the injured, the condition of Liton was stated to be critical and Alamgir was taken to CMCH casualty ward, he said.

Witnesses said the trawler with eight people on board caught fire around 11am on Saturday, leaving three people injured.

Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence of Chittagong unit MD Jashimuddin told the Dhaka tribune that the trawler caught fire following an explosion in its engine.

Being informed, firefighters reached the spot and doused the fire.

Of the injured, the condition of Liton was stated to be critical, said In-charge of CMCH police outpost Jahirul Islam.
