A garment worker has died and 26 others fell sick allegedly after drinking water at a factory in Bypass area of Bhogra in Gazipur.
The deceased is Shahida Begum, 30, sewing operator of Masstread International Garments Limited.
The authorities have declared four factories in the area closed for Saturday following workers' unrest over the incident.
Sewing operator Shahidul Islam and workers of the factory said a number of their colleagues fell ill after drinking water at the factory in the morning.
However, the factory manager Sheikh Tahmina Parvin said Shahida Begum suddenly fell sick while punching her card at the entrance around 8am.
"She was rushed to Tairunnesa Medical College where duty doctors declared her dead," she added.
The factory manager said hearing the news of Shahida's death, other workers fell sick over fear.
The ailing workers were admitted to sadar hospital and Tairunnesa Medical College.
Acting residential doctor of Gazipur sadar hospital, Abdus Salam said the admitted workers are affected with "mass psychogenic illness".
"We did not find any symptoms of food poisoning in primary examination," he said.
