Poor quality of fertiliser a bane for Natore farmers

About 50,000 sacks of urea fertiliser have remained uncared for on the premises of a buffer stock godown in Natore.

Consequently, a large quantity of fertiliser is becoming unusable as they solidify under the pressure of upper sacks.

Farmers said they were not getting accurate weight of fertiliser as much of the agri inputs kept in sacks have been washed away by rainwater.

Moreover, the godown authority has kept 14,000 tonnes of urea fertiliser in an 8,000-capacity godown haphazardly, threatening the quality of the fertiliser.

Farmers said they did not expect positive results after applying fertilisers on their crops.

Abdur Rashid, dealer of Dighapatia Bazar, said when they tried to sell the fertiliser, farmers did not want to buy it.

“Moreover, the godown authority threatened us that if we do not buy the wet fertiliser, they will not sell us the quality fertiliser.”

Sadek, general secretary of Natore Fertiliser Dealers’ Association and Aminul Haq, president of Natore chamber of commerce and industries, said there are 64 fertiliser dealers in the district facing problems and count losses regularly.

They urged the government to construct more godowns to ease sufferings of dealers.

Engineer Nazrul Islam, in-charge of Natore Buffer godown, said the government had preserved fertilisers there to supply Natore, Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj.

Alhaz Uddin, DD of Agriculture Extension, said: “When Natore godown was constructed, there were only 40,000 to 50,000 hectares of cultivable land. But, farmers are now cultivating around 1.50 lakh hectares of land.” He said they would look into the matter immediately.
