Some fifty workers have been hospitalised after falling sick in a socks making factory at Sreepur upazila of Gazipur district.
The factory, Glove & Gloves Manufacturing Bangladesh Limited, located in Rajendrapur Signboard area of the upazila, was also declared closed following the incident on Wednesday afternoon.
The reason behind the accident could not be known immediately.
Halima, 18, Aleya, 30, Majeda, 22, Nasima, 30, Sharmin, 19, Abida, 20, and Shahnaj, 20, along with twelve others were admitted to Gazipur Sadar Hospital.
Factory workers said after the lunch break the ailing workers resumed their scheduled works around 2pm.
After a while they suddenly experienced heavy convulsion and asthma and gradually fell ill one by one.
On-duty doctor of Rajendrapur Modern Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, Mithun Sutradhar said: “We have referred some fifteen workers to Gazipur Sadar Hospital after giving primary treatment.”
“We suspect that they may have fallen victim to carbon monoxide gas contamination,” he added.
Human resources and administrative officer of the factory, Shahin Reza said about 600 workers were working in the factory during the incident. The factory was declared closed for Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Sreepur UNO Mohammad Sadekur Rahman and Sreepur Upazila Health Complex physician Ahmedul Kabir visited the factory.
Sreepur model police station Officer-in-Charge Mohsinul Kadir said: “On information, additional police were deployed to the area.”
