PM asks officials to monitor Saradha scam

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday asked the officials concerned to keep a close watch on Saradha Group’s financial scam as it had given money to the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in order to create unrest in the country.

She also ordered the officials to keep an eye on the investigation into the issue being carried out by the Indian government.

The premier gave the instructions as the issue came up for discussion after the regular cabinet meeting. Some of the ministers also took part in the discussion, a senior cabinet member who attended the meeting told the Dhaka Tribune.

He said, “Though the premier is concerned about Saradha Group’s financial support to Jamaat, she wants to see the investigation of the Indian government. The Bangladesh government may take steps after the investigation ends. That’s why she has asked the officials to keep an eye on the issue.”

Another junior minister told the Dhaka Tribune that the premier also asked the ministers and persons concerned to prevent the distortion of history of Bangladesh and independence of the country.

The issue came up for discussion when State Minister for Science and Technology Yafes Osman started talking about a cinematography titled “Our Bangladesh of Bangabandhu National Novo Theatre”.

The state minister requested his colleagues to watch the video as it had contained the facts about the birth of  Bangladesh and our liberation war.

Taking part in the discussion, Hasina said, “All of us have to be conscious about the history of Bangladesh and liberation war as conspirators are still active in distorting history. All should raise their voice against them.”

However, the cabinet yesterday approved the draft of Customs Act, 2014 which was prepared following the previous act which was in English.

The inconsistencies in the existing law were removed and the issues of some international conventions incorporated in the draft.

The draft would be placed at the cabinet meeting again as it was approved in principle on condition of getting opinion of the law ministry. It would placed before the parliament after getting final approval from the cabinet.
