A solo art exhibition “Keramos” by Mohammad Rabiul Hossain Jewel is under way at the Zainul Gallery of Dhaka University’s faculty of fine arts and is scheduled to close today. The show features both installation artworks and sculptural pieces, about thirty of them, through the use of ceramics.
His work “Secret Love” gives form to a couple of wooden dolls symbolising the secret love affair between a couple.
Under the common title “Earth of Heaven,” using different symbols, he brings out two installation artworks dealing with politics, religion and violence. “Through these pieces, I tried to show earth as a heaven that is yet to be made. There is a black figurine at the centre, symbolising the darkness in men generated from the ill-effects of religion.”
“Religion can be put to good use, but it can be a detriment also. It can be a political instrument as well, depending on how you use it,” he added.
“Key of Heaven,” another installation art piece, deals with the problems in life and promises a solution. “There are problems and there are solutions. The key is to find the right solution, the right key,” Jewel said. “Food,” featuring two deformed birds, shows how adulteration can affect even the likes of birds, which take their food from natural sources.
This is the first solo exhibition by Jewel, who did his masters in ceramics.
