St Gregory’s High School ended their 29-year title drought by beating Dhanmondi Tutorial in the final of the Polar Ice Cream 22nd School Handball Tournament boys section at the M Mansur Ali National Handball Stadium yesterday. Meanwhile in the girls section, Viqarunnisa Noon School & College emerged as the champions by overcoming the defending champions Sunnydale.
St Gregory’s didn’t have to foil hard as they comfortably defeated Dhanmondi Tutorial by 18-7 in the boy’s final. The victors led the first-half 10-2. Ikramul and Sujan netted eight and six goals respectively for the Gregs.
St Gregory’s won the inaugural edition of the tournament in 1985, but failed to win any more silverware since then. They reached the final last year but had to remain content with the second position after Narinda Govt High School beat them. On the other hand, it was the first final for Dhanmondi Tutorial in their school’s handball history.
Viqarunnisa retained its glory after five seasons as they handed Sunnydale a 7-1 defeat in the girls final yesterday noon. This is Viqarunnisa’s 14th school handball title, the most by any team. The champions led the first-half 5-1. Fatema netted four goals for the winners.
Ikramul of St Gregory’s was adjudged the player of the tournament in boys section while Ayesha of Viqarunnisa became best player in the girls section.
Benazir Ahmed, police commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, distributed the prizes among the winners as chief guest.
