Nazrul Sangeet legend Feroza Begum was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit of Apollo Hospital in the capital yesterday as her condition deteriorated, hospital officials and family members said.
Feroza, who is in her late 80s, has been suffering from a number of old age complications.
Doctors and family members said her heart and kidney were not functioning well. Moreover, she has been diagnosed with jaundice.
She was hospitalised three days ago.
“She should go through kidney dialysis by the afternoon. The dialysis process can begin only after her heartbeat comes to a normal stage,” Shafin Ahmed, son of the legendary singer, said.
Apollo Hospital Duty Manager Chinmoy Bhattacharya told the Dhaka Tribune at 10:30pm that the popular singer was still at the ICU.
Born in an aristocratic Muslim family of Faridpur, Feroza was drawn to music from the childhood.
Feroza was considered the most prominent Nazrul Sangeet singer in the subcontinent. She is particularly given credit for successfully reviving the popularity of the music genre at a time when it was losing popularity. Her unique presentation contributed to it.
Feroza was married to Kamal Dasgupta who was a renowned singer, Nazrul song composer and music director. Their sons Hamin Ahmed and Shafin Ahmed are also famous singers of the country.
