Muhit: BNP's boycott of polls is unfortunate

Terming the BNP's boycott of January 5 elections as “unfortunate”, Finance Minister AMA Muhith said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina wanted to form the government with all parties, but BNP trashed the proposal.

He said: “It was unfortunate for the BNP that the party boycotted the January five polls. Our PM invited the party to join polls, but she received a negative response.”

He made the comment while addressing the council of the district unit Jubo League, Awami League's youth front, at Habiganj municipality on Thursday morning.

Assuring prosperity for the nation, he said: “Sheikh Hasina's government will ensure happiness, prosperity and development for the nation in the next four years.”

Stressing on maintaining peace, the minister further said the country needed peace.

“Without maintaining peace, development cannot be ensured.”

“The agricultural production has been increased from 27 million tons to 30 million tons per year. Despite scarce land, 8 million tonnes of surplus food have been produced during the current government,” he added.

Claiming that the government has made extensive development in the education sector, the minister said: “Now educational institutions have come within 2km reach for almost all students.”

Mentioning that poverty hampers the growth and development of the nation, he informed that the government has increased the size of the budget in order to fight poverty.
