The construction of the boundary walls in Azimpur graveyard started under the supervision of the Lalbagh police yesterday.
In line with the High Court order, the Lalbagh police have taken the initiative to construct the boundary wall of the graveyard.
Inspector (Investigation) of Lalbagh police station told the Dhaka Tribune: “As per the directive of the High Court, we have taken the initiative to start the construction. Some 100 labourers are working to construct the boundary wall of the graveyard as soon as possible.”
Earlier on September 1, the High Court summoned three police officials, including Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Benzir Ahmed, for not complying with its previous order regarding the construction of boundary walls of Azimpur graveyard.
The court also ordered them to appear before it on September 10.
An HC bench comprising of justices Farah Mahbub and Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo passed the order following an explanation of contempt of court by the Dhaka South City Corporation.
The petition was filed by Jakir Hossain, an Azimpur resident, seeking directives to stop the construction of a street by the DSCC upon his fathers’ grave at the graveyard.
Following the writ on August 1, 2013, the same HC bench directed the DSCC authorities to construct the boundary wall of the graveyard within three months of the petition, while the police force was also asked to assist the authorities concerned in this regard.
Local people, however, expressed discontent over construction of the wall.
They said thousands of people and hundreds of transport vechicles ply the road everyday. If the graveyard boundary wall is constructed, it will increase the suffering of the people.
