The construction work of the boundary walls of Azimpur graveyard has been started under the supervision of the Lalbagh police.
In line with the High Court order, the Lalbagh police have taken the initiative to construct the boundary walls of the graveyard. Some 100 labourers started the construction work around 9am on Wednesday.
Inspector (Investigation) of Lalbagh police station told the Dhaka Tribune: “As per the directive of the High Court, we have taken the initiative to start the construction work. Some 100 labourers are working to construct the boundary walls of the graveyard as soon as possible.”
Earlier on September 1, the High Court summoned three police officials, including Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Benzir Ahmed, for not complying with its previous order regarding the construction of boundary walls of Azimpur graveyard.
The court also ordered them to appear before it on September 10.
An HC bench comprising of justices Farah Mahbub and Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo passed the order following an explanation of contempt of court by Dhaka South City Corporation.
The petition was filed by Jakir Hossain, an Azimpur resident, seeking directives to stop the construction of a street by the DSCC upon his fathers’ grave at the graveyard.
Following the writ on August 1, 2013, the same HC bench directed the DSCC authorities to construct the boundary wall of the graveyard within three months of the petition, while the police force was also asked to assist the authorities concerned in this regard.
