Road accidents kill five across the country

At least five people died in separate road accidents across the country yesterday.

A retired army officer, Abu Bakkar Siddique, 45, was killed on the Naogaon-Rajshahi Highway yesterday.

Locals said around 11am, a Rajshahi-bound truck hit the van carrying Abu Bakkar from the opposite direction near Hapaniya bus stand leaving Abu Bakkar dead on spot.

Mamun Miya, 35, a local factory worker died in a road accident on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway near Noyonpur area in Sripur upazila of Gazipur. The dead was a sanitary supervisor at the RAK ceramic factory.

Maona Highway police station Officer-in-Charge Sanoar Hossain said around 9:45am, Mamun was ran over by a Dhaka-bound passenger bus Ena Paribahan while crossing the road.

Following his death, the fellow workers blocked the highway and vandalised 10 vehicles. They set fire to Ena Paribahan creating long tailback on both sides of the highway, said the OC.

A freedom fighter died while two others sustained serious injuries as a Nosimon (locally made shallow-engine driven human-haulier) skidded off in Madhukhali area of Tungipara upazila under Gopalganj district yesterday.

The dead is Moslem Uddin Dariya, 65, son of late Abdul Hakim Dariya of Penakhali village while the injured are Charab Ali, 40, driver of the nosimon and another passenger Jahangir Dariya, 85.

Tungipara police station Officer-in-Charge Monirul Islam said the Modhukhali-bound nosimon carrying the victims skidded off the road while trying to over take an engine-run van and fell into a roadside ditch leaving the freedom fighter dead on spot. The injured were admitted to Tungipara Health Complex.

Two people were killed and one was injured in a road accident in Ghatail upazila under Tangail district yesterday.

The dead were identified as Shukur Mahmud, 45, and Abdul Barek, 60, hailing from East Pakutia village of the upazila.

Ghatail police station Officer-in-Charge Fazlul Kabir said a Dhaka-bound passenger bus hit a rickshaw van from behind in Pakutia Deulibari area on the Tangail-Mymensingh Highway leaving Barek dead on the spot and another passenger of the van injured.

The injured van puller Shukur was admitted to Ghatail upazila health complex where he succumbed to his injuries around 2:30pm.
