Locals formed a human chain in front of the district press club yesterday protesting the recent killing of a Bangladeshi fisherman by a team of Indian Border Security Force (BSF).
The human chain followed a discussion programme where the speakers demanded exemplary punishment for the BSF men who were involved in the brutal killing that took place along the Shing road border area in Sadar upazila on August 22.
In the event, they urged upon the government to take necessary steps immediately to lodge a complaint with the BSF high-ups for bringing the alleged Indian border force members to book.
Hundreds of villagers of the district also joined the programme to express their solidarity with the demand.
On August 21, a patrol team from BSF Sakati camp 14 picked up fisher Akhtarul Islam, 30, a resident of Prodhanpara village in the upazila, from the border before dawn while he was catching fish and they did not return him despite requests from the local BGB camp authorities.
On the following day, locals spotted Akhtarul’s body afloat on the Chhoto Jamuna River, which bore many injury marks.
