The Janasasthya Odikhar Rokka Committee has demanded to set up a new medical university instead of turning Chittagong Medical College Hospital into university in the port city of Chittagong.
The organisation which is working for preservation of public health rights of citizen came up with the demand at a press conference held at Chittagong press club on Saturday morning.
Convener Dr Mahfuzur Rahman of Janasasthya Odikhar Rokka Committee read out the written statement at the conference.
He said that they got a draft of university law of 2012 recently which mentioned that all the establishments under Chittagong Medical College would be given to university.
But the government in a gazette published in April 30 said the hospital would remain as a government organisation.
The gazette was published after demonstration against the decision of the government on April 15 to turn the Chittagong Medical College into university.
Member secretary of the organisation Sushanta Barua said if Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) would be turned into university then poor patients, who are getting health service in minimum cost, would be denied such service in low cost.
He said they are not against the establishing medical university but it should be a separate establishment for better heath service to poor.
