DMCH baby thieves on remand

A Dhaka court yesterday placed two women on a three-day remand in the case filed in connection with the kidnapping of a newborn from the Dhaka Medical College Hospital on August 21.

Metropolitan Magistrate Jaynab Begum passed the order when Shahbagh police station Sub-Inspector Ferdous Alam, also investigation officer of the case, produced the suspects before her court seeking a seven-day remand for interrogation. The remanded are Rasheda Khanom alias Parvin, 48, and Belly Akter alias Rahima, 45.

On Thursday, acting on a tip-off, RAB rescued the kidnapped child from Gazipur’s Board Bazar area and detained the two women in connection with the incident.

Also at a press briefing on the same day, RAB’s Legal and Media Wing Director Mufti Mahbub Khan said Parvin, a professional midwife, kidnapped the newborn after befriending Runa, a mother of twin babies, at the DMCH.

He added that RAB personnel acted on a tip-off and arrested Parvin from her house in Gazipur; while based on her information, the baby was found at Rahima’s house.

During preliminary interrogation, Parvin confessed to RAB officials that she had sold the baby to Rahima for Tk40,000, Mahbub added.
