Hundreds of followers of Islami Chhatra Sena, student wing of Bangladesh Islami Front, have blocked Muradpur intersection in the port city demanding the arrest of the killers of Ahle Sunnat leader Shaikh Nurul Islam Faruqi.
Meanwhile, the Chhatra Sena supporters put a barricade on the intersection by setting fire on tyres after Jumma prayers, Harun-or-Rashid, deputy commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, said.
The first namaz-e-janaza of Faruqi was scheduled to be held at Jamiatul Falah mosque grounds in Chittagong in the morning.
However, the administration did not permit to hold the janaza there on security grounds, said the DC.
Later, Faruqi’s first namaj-e-janaza was at Jatiya Eidgah ground in the capital after Jumma prayers; and the second will be held at his village home in Panchagarh after the Asr prayer.
On Wednesday night, unidentified armed assailants slaughtered Shaikh Nurul Islam Faruqi, a presenter of religious programmes on Channel i, at his own residence in the capital’s East Rajabazar area.
The deceased was the Presidium member and international affairs secretary of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, as well as the Presidium member of Islamic Front Bangladesh – a platform of several Islamist groups.
Apart from anchoring programmes titled “Shantir Pothe” and “Kafela” on Channel i, he owned Faruque Tours and Travels Private Limited, a Hajj agency, and served as the imam of Supreme Court mosque.
