Little has been done for the demolition or repairs of 112 risky buildings, or the evacuation of people from those spots in Bandarban municipality.
These buildings had been placed in three categories– very risky, less risky and moderately risky – in the previous year, sources in the local municipality said.
There are quite a few in the very risky category.
They include Aparajita Bhaban at Rajarmath, Barua Bhaban at Memberpara, Shaon Bhaban at Bazaar area, Al Amin Boarding, Jamal Boarding, Patowari Building at Armypara, Boshrot Ali Building and Chowdhury Building at T&T area.
Only two of 114 buildings have been torn down so far.
For reasons unknown, the others have been left to themselves, with plenty of residents still living inside most of the structures.
A man called Abdus Salam, who lives at Bazar area, said he had not seen any steps taken by the local administration against the risky buildings in the bazaar area; it’s almost as if local administration had gone into hibernation after marking the buildings as dangerous and hazardous.
Executive Engineer Mong Sui Khoi Marma of Bandarban Municipality said the committee have plans to take action soon.
In a 2009 earthquake report, Bandarban was classified as an extreme damage risk zone.
The report pointed out that high casualties could take place there because of a hill slides and building collapses during any major earthquake in the district.
