On 23 August 2014, the State University of Bangladesh (SUB) organised a seminar on three different issues, i.e. Academic Freedom and Responsibility; Higher Education Management – Change of Professional Roles in a Diversifying Work Force Discussant and Ethics and Ethical Dilemma.
Head of the department of English Studies Professor A.M.M.Hamidur Rahman discussed the ‘Academic Freedom and Responsibility’ issue. He portrayed the academic freedom in a way that the academic freedom is a fundamental necessity for the production of true knowledge, and academics must have the freedom to pursue knowledge without let, hindrance and interference from the authority.
In the full house, Professor of Public Health & Research Management Dr Harun-Ar-Rashid discussed the ‘Higher Education Management – Change of Professional Roles in a Diversifying Work Force Discussant.’ He said, “Higher Education Management (HEM) - a heterogeneous occupational field has created a dynamic labor market, though careers within HEM are mostly accidental and lack appropriate career path. He added that the higher education institutions are required to professionalise themselves as employers and create improved staff policies.
In the seminar, Ethics and Ethical Dilemma was the most interesting topic to be tabled. Advisor to the Department of Journalism, Communication & Media Studies in SUB Associate Professor Robaet Ferdous said,” human life is full of ethical dilemma. But we need to come out of the dilemma to make our social life meaningful.’ He defined ethics as the science of the ideal human character, the science of moral duty, a set of concepts and principles that guide us in determining what behavior helps or harms sentient creatures.”
Honourable President of the Board of Trustees of SUB Dr. A M Shamim attended the program as Chief Guest and former vice-chancellor of the Dhaka University and advisor to the State University of Bangladesh Professor Dr. S M A Faiz played moderator role.
