5 killed in road accidents across country

At least five people were killed in road accidents in Tangail, Chandpur, Gazipur and Narsingdi districts yesterday.

Our Tangail correspondent reports: At least two people were killed and 10 others injured in a collision between a bus and a pickup van on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway in the district.

The deceased were identified as Abdul Malek, 30, son of Abdul Motaleb of Bawshi village and Md Lutfar Rahman of Sheerpur.

Gorai Highway police station Officer-in-Charge Jubaidul Alam said: “A Jamalpur-bound fish-laden pickup van collided with a passenger bus of Ovi Poribohan in Asimtola area under Mirzapur upazila around 9am, leaving Malek dead on the spot and injuring 11.

He said: “Of the injured, Lutfur died when he was admitted to Mirzapur Kumudini Hospital.” In Chandpur, a child died as a bus ran over her on the Chandpur-Comilla Highway in Jagatpu Bazar in the district.

Kachua police station Officer-in-Charge Alamgir Hossen Majumder said the child died on the spot as the bus ran over her while she was crossing the road with her mother.

In Gazipur, a man was killed as a pickup van ran over him in Tongi area.

Police said Hekmat Ali, 50, died on the spot as the pickup van ran over him while he was crossing the road in the area.

The body was sent to hospital morgue.

Narsingdi correspondent said a man was killed on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in the district.

Police said Amena Begum, 50, died on the spot as a CNG run auto rickshaw ran over her.
