A mob killed at least three suspected robbers and injured three others at Chiringa village in Noakhali’s Kabirhat upazila in the early hours of yesterday.
Of the deceased, one was identified as Azad, 32, while two others could not be identified immediately.
The injured robbers were identified as Arif, 28, Abir, 24, Nur Nabi, 29 and Ripon, 27 and the wounded villagers as Harun-ur-Rashid, 55, Md Saddam, 25, and Abdur Rahim, 28. They all were admitted to Abdul Malek Ukil Medical College Hospital in Noakhali.
Kabirhat police station OC SM Mahbubul Alam confirmed this incident and detailed that a gang of robbers numbering 12 to 15 went to the house of Enayet Bepari at the village at about 2am.
While they were trying to break down the door, the inmates of the house got wind of it and informed their neighbours and relatives over the telephone. After that, they started shouting seeking help and locals announced about the robbery by mosque loudspeaker. Hence, the robbers tried to flee but the villagers caught them and beat up them.
Two robbers, including Azad, died on the spot while five others received injuries. Three other villagers were also injured as the robbers stabbed them.
Police rushed to the scene hearing of the incident and sent the injured seven people – five robbers and three villagers – to Abdul Malek Ukil Medical College Hospital. Of the five injured robbers, one died at around 7:am. Police recovered two light guns, five rounds of bullets and three sharp weapons from the spot.
