More than 500 electricity consumers besieged the office of the Power Development Board (PDB) in Jamalpur yesterday.
Last month, the PDB issued exorbitant electricity bills to almost every household in the city, alleged a number of agitated consumers who had vandalised the windows of the office of Iqbal Hossain, executive engineer of the Jamalpur Power Development Board.
The amounts that appeared in the bills were two to three times higher than usual. Moreover, many of the bills were prepared without reading the meters, they claimed.
The consumers had to face hassles at the PDB office when they went to address the issue, claimed Motiur Rahman Chowdhury, a consumer.
The situation was brought under control when police arrived at the scene and the PDB officials gave assurances to the protesting crowd.
Iqbal Hossain said the bill for the month of July had been halted. New bills would be prepared after reading the meters to assess power consumption.
