RMG workers-police clash in Narayanganj

An incident of chase and counter chase has been ensued between the workers of a garments factory and the police on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Bandar upazila of Narayanganj on Saturday morning.

Locals said the workers of Partex Group took to the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway and staged a demonstration demanding increment hike in front of their factory at Madanpur around 7am.

Their demonstration disrupted the traffic on the road for about half-an-hours.

Being informed, police rushed in and tried to remove the agitated workers from the road.

The angry workers claimed that at one stage of chase and counter chase, the police charged baton to disperse the demonstrators, triggering a clash that left 15 people injured.

Denying the claim, Bandar police station Officer-in-Charge Akhter Hossain said: “The workers hurled brick chips at the law enforcers. But, police did not charge baton and none received injuries during the protest.”

“A team of additional police force rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control around 9am. The workers later held a negotiation meeting with the factory authority.”
