The flood situation worsened as a child drowned and another went missing, presumably already dead, in Jamalpur while it remained unchanged in Kurigram, reported our correspondents yesterday.
The deceased was Tinni, 7, daughter of Billal Mia at Jonail village in Jamalpur’s Madarganj upazila while the identity of another child named Roni, 7, who went missing, could not be known immediately
Confirming this, Madarganj municipality’s Ward No 7 Councilor Md Shawkat Ali said Tinni had drowned while bathing in the flood water.
He added that the flood had worsened as water level rose by 2 centimetres in the Jamuna river over last 24 hours. Water was now flowing above 36 centimetres of danger level in the river.
With the rise of water, vast tracts of Melandah, Madarganj and Bakshiganj were flooded anew in the district.
At least 30 unions under Islampur, Dewanganj, Sarishabari, Melandah, Madarganj and Bakshiganj upazilas were flooded, marooning at least 1,50,000 people, for a few days until yesterday. Acute food crisis was seen among people surrounded by flood water.
Moreover, at least 15,000 hectares of crop and vegetable lands were affected by the innundation.
