Obaidul: Tenders invited for building third Shitalakkhya bridge

Communications Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday said the government had invited tenders for building a Third Shitalakkhya Bridge in Narayanganj.

The construction of 1,290-meter-long bridge would start in January 2015 and it would end by 2018, he said.

The bridge will cost an estimated Tk377 crore, of which Tk100 will be provided by the government and the rest will be lent by the Saudi government.

Project Director Firoz Iqbal said the communications between Dhaka and south and south-western regions would be smooth once the bridge is built.

Alongside this, Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Sylhet communications would be easier, he said.

The minister was speaking to reporters after attending a meeting held at the ministry yesterday over traffic congestion resulting from the construction of the Mogbazar flyover in the capital.

Obaidul said they had formed a seven member committee for monitoring traffic congestion and water-logging adjacent to the flyover.

Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) Executive Director Md Kaikobad Hossain is heading the committee.

Minister Obaidul said the committee would work during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha and Durga Puja as well as till the flyover is completed.

Roads Division Additional Secretary Md Farid Uddin Ahmed, Roads and Highways Department Chief Engineer Mafizul Islam Rajkhan also were present at the meeting.
