Unidentified miscreants have severely hacked a local journalist at North Mallik Bari of the district early Tuesday.
The injured is Pulak Chatterjee, 50, Samakal's Barisal bureau chief and also secretary of Barisal Press Club.
Police detained one and assumed the incident might have been occurred over family disputes.
Police and family sources said unidentified miscreants ambushed Pulak and hacked him severely when he returned home from work at around 1:15am.
Pulak's father Bishwapati Chatterjee said the miscreants fled the scene before the family members opened the gate.
He was taken to Barisal Sher-E Bangla Medical College Hospital where he went through a surgery, said Pulak's brother Dipak Lal Chatterjee.
Dr Jahirul Islam Manik, hospital's head of surgery unit 1, said: “He sustained six wounds to different parts of his body and one of his cheek was severely chopped.”
“He is out of danger now,” he said.
Barisal Kotwali police station Sub-Inspector Mohiuddin said they detained Pulak's ex-wife's brother Subal Mukharjee from the hospital premises in connection to the matter.
He said Subal was detained as Pulak uttered his name and suspected that the attack was conducted over family rivalry.
Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge Shakhawat Hossain said police recovered a sharp weapon from the frontal area of the house.
