Char Khanpur Border Outpost (BOP) of the Border Guard Bangladesh under Paba upazila of the district is facing a serious threat of erosion by the Padma River.
The BOP might be devoured if 20 more yards are eroded, said Mofidul Islam Bachhu, chairman of Harian Union Parishad.
Although geo bags valued at around Taka 2 crore were dumped into the site last year the BGB camp might not be protected.
Meanwhile, the BGB personnel have started removing goods from the camp. A massive erosion has eaten up Char Khidirpur BOP last year posing a serious threat to loosing Bangladesh land in the area, Bachhu added.
Apart from this, the river erosion has taken a serious turn in Sultanganj under Godagari Upazila of the district as the nearby Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj highway is now remained only 500 meters away from the erosion that needs immediate measures.
With rising of floodwater, erosion along both banks of the Padma River has taken a serious turn at present. On Friday, the erosion entered 20 yards of Char Khanpur BOP.
Side by side with the BGB men, common people of the Char Khanpur and Char Khidirpur have started removing their houses and other goods including domestic animals to the nearby safer places as many other places might be devoured if the erosion prolongs.
Local BGB authorities have declared the BOP abandoned. Arms and ammunitions were removed to the nearby Char Taranagar Govt. Primary School. Process of removing solar plants and other heavy goods to Talaimary Camp is going on.
Last year, the Khanpur BOP couldn't be protected from the devastating erosion. On that adverse situation, Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) dumped geotaxis bags into 480-meter area by spending around Taka 2 crore to protect the Khanpur BOP.
But, unfortunately all the works and efforts might go in vain this time, said Harunur Rashid, executive engineer of BWDB, due to the intensified erosion.
On Friday last, BGB Sector Commander Col Ferdous Hossain, Battalion Commander Lt Col Anwar Hossain, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Dr Syed Shahriar Firoj and Paba Upazila Nirbahi Officer Razzaqul Islam visited the erosion point to see for themselves the present trend. They also discussed ways and means to protect the area.
Meanwhile, the erosion is taking place at Zianagar, Bosori, Nobagonga and Sonaikandi near the city posing a serious threat to the city protection embankment.
