Pinak owner's son sent to jail

Police presented Faruk Limon before the court in Munshiganj yesterday and sought a seven day remand to question him regarding the case filed over the August 4 mishap.

The judge set Monday to hear the police's plea and sent Limon to jail, said Louhajang police station Officer-in-Charge Md Tofazzal Hossain. Rapid Action Battalion arrested the 27-year-old from Dhaka's Khilkhet on Friday morning.

He was the in-charge of the ticket sales and overall supervision of Pinak-6, which sank on August 4 in the Padma River near Mawa with over 300 passengers on board. Since the accident, 48 bodies were recovered from downstream while 61 are still unaccounted for, according to official figures.

A futile search for the vessel was called off after eight days. The BIWTA filed a case regarding the disaster with Louhajang police, accusing six people including Limon and his father, the vessel's owner, Abu Bakar Siddik Kalu.
