GPI: Bangladesh more peaceful than India, Pakistan

Bangladesh has fared better than the neighbouring India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka in the Global Peace Index 2014.

The country has moved seven notches up to 98 among 162 countries in the world in terms of ensuring peace, reported Australia-based international research organisation the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).

Bangladesh was at 105th position last year.

Bangladesh is the third most peaceful nation in South Asia

The IEP recently released the report on global peace, considering three broad themes involving ongoing domestic and international conflict, militarisation, and social safety and security.

According to the report, Bangladesh is the third most peaceful nation in South Asia while Bhutan ranks as the most peaceful nation in the region securing 16th position and Nepal became second with 76th position in the index.

Among the other South Asian countries, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan have respectively secured 143rd, 154th, 105th and 161st position.

Iceland has maintained its status as the most peaceful country in the world, followed by Denmark and Australia.

On the other hand, Syria ranked as the least peaceful country followed by Israel, South Sudan, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, Central African Republic, Congo Republic, Pakistan, North Korea and Russia.

Europe remains the most peaceful region in the world. 

The other most peaceful nations are--New Zealand, Switzerland, Finland, Canada, Japan, Belgium and Norway.

The GPI, the world’s leading measure of global peacefulness, showed that the world has become less peaceful each year since 2008.

It scaled the ongoing domestic and international conflict, safety and security in society and militarisation in all 162 countries of the world by taking into account 22 indicators.
