800 Khagrachhari families marooned by flash floods

Around 800 families were reported to be marooned yesterday as flash floods worsened due to three days of heavy rains in Dighinala and Sadar upazilas in Khagrachhari.

Locals said around 500 families were surrounded by water at seven villages in Dighinala upazila’s Merung union and over 50 families took shelter at various educational institutes.

The flood-hit villages are Merung Bazar, Sobanpur, Hazachhara, Chhoto Merung, Badolchhari, Boro Merung and Bachha Merung.

A similar flood situation affected Sadar upazila where around 300 families were encircled by flood water at several areas, including Shantinagar, Ganjapara and Muslimpara.

Another 100 families took cover from the floods by taking shelter at various educational institutes. The Koila Point on the Ramgar-Feni road gave way to heavy rains earlier on Thursday.

District authorities said they had allocated three tons of rice in aid to the flood-hit people. If needed, more will be allocated, they said.

Flash floods have hit the area since Wednesday.
