The National Mourning Day, commemorating the 39th death anniversary of the country’s founding president and Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is being observed across the country.
On this day in 1975, the greatest Bangali of all time, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, along with his family members, was assassinated in one of the most barbaric carnages in the human history.
Bangabandhu’s daughters, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana survived because they were abroad at the time.
The day is a public holiday.
The programme of the day began with the hoisting of national flag at half-mast and raising of black flags atop all public and private buildings.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid homage to the father of the nation at Bangabandhu Bhaban on Dhanmondi Road 32 at 6:32am by placing wreaths followed by standing in solemn silence in front of Bangabandhu’s portrait.
Hundreds of people from all walks of life thronged Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in the morning to pay profound homage to Bangabandhu by placing wreaths at his portrait.
The national dailies published special supplements. Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television and other private television channels and radio centres are broadcasting special programmes highlighting Bangabandhu's contributions to the nation.
